The New Empire was never very popular

At least, Godzilla x Kong: A New Empire honor its The greatest commitment.you will see many giant creatures Fight other giant creatures. Godzilla and King Kong are just two of them, as they battle in fantastical settings of jaw-dropping colors and lights. There’s an undeniable joy in it.

However, everything is not about fighting Godzilla×King Kong It feels like overly complex filler was inserted to kill time before the next battle. The result is a film full of ebbs and flows that never feels particularly cohesive or interesting, though the film does an admirable job of trying to differentiate itself from other similar films.

Directed again by Adam Wingard, Godzilla x Kong: A New Empire where to pick up Godzilla vs. Kong left. In that movie, humanity discovers a brand new world at the center of the Earth called Hollow Earth, where Kong will live and rule while his nemesis Godzilla will remain on the surface. Understandably, these creatures and discoveries have captivated the world, and scientists, like Dr. Erin Andrews (Rebecca Hall), have dedicated their careers to studying them.

However, not everything is as it seems in Hollow Earth, and whatever happens there, Kong and Godzilla are on a path that leads to… something. It also seems to involve Dr. Andrews’ adopted daughter Jia (Kelly Hottle), who spent her childhood on Kong’s homeworld of Skull Island and is now grown up and struggling to settle into a normal life.

So most of Godzilla×King Kong Just to unravel this mystery. What frightened these two giants and what did it mean? The story then unfolds in three ways, one with humans (which also includes characters played by Dan Stevens and Brian Tyree Henry) trying to figure out the answer, one with Kong embarking on his own journey, and one with Godzilla looks like a cell phone, traveling around the world and recharging his batteries.

There are other things going on too. In addition to the main mystery, Wingard and his team also tried to present these familiar creatures in unfamiliar ways. In certain moments between battles, we see them in simpler, everyday situations. Kong just took a shower. Godzilla took several naps. Kong meets a character named Zuko and develops a father-son relationship with him.It seems that the idea is to humanize the character while also giving Godzilla×King Kong Its own take on the monster universe. It’s well-intentioned, but it doesn’t really add up in the end. The occasional funny or cutesy scene serves mostly to slow down the main plot, which already takes us away from the larger action beats.

In the great tradition of the MonsterVerse movies, the human characters are more or less secondary here, too. We spend the most time with them, but every time they appear on screen, we just want more Godzilla or King Kong. As a result, talented actors like Rebecca Hall and Brian Tyree Henry are mostly lost in the mix. Dan Stevens did get the assignment. His character Trapper, a thrill-seeking titan vet, is so ridiculous that he actually improves every scene he’s in. Other than him, everyone else feels like a set piece.

Plus, the way everything is constructed is almost too methodical for the genre. Mini-set sequences sprinkled throughout provide exciting moments, as well as a noteworthy revelation or two, but mostly, much of the film feels like final-exam homework. According to the film’s title, the final test will see Godzilla and Kong team up to fight the threat they’ve always felt.

Now, I shouldn’t admit this, but I will.all Godzilla×King Kong“Finale”‘s flaws might have been forgiven if the entire movie was aiming for a jaw-dropping finale in an overly contrived way. but it is not the truth. It’s really cool and ties all the story threads together in a logical way, including a very exciting addition for fans of the genre, but there’s nothing in it that’s as interesting or exciting as the ending of the last film. Surprisingly, the latter pits the characters first against each other and then against Mechagodzilla.if Godzilla×King Kong Just stuck on the landing, I’d be happy. It is not.

watch Godzilla×King KongI also can’t help but wonder if the film suffered in any way from its release and success Godzilla minus one.On paper, multiple godzilla It won’t be a problem for a movie released in such close proximity. Especially if their tone is both flirty and fun.but Godzilla minus one Bring us excitement, emotion and poignancy. It immediately and promptly sets a standard in our hearts: godzilla Movies can be that way, even if this level of quality is the exception rather than the rule.then came Godzilla×King Konga well-made, big-budget spectacle more in line with some sort of one-off godzilla fare, but it just doesn’t ring. Why minus one The effect is so good, but this one doesn’t?

Ideally, there would be no connection between the two. They’re different movies, different filmmakers, different everything except a giant green character. But psychologically, the film doesn’t live up to the extra expectations simply because of its timing. Godzilla x Kong: A New Empire yes Not a bad movie. It’s not painful to watch. There are good ideas and beautiful visuals in it. However, once it’s over, it’s largely forgettable, which is really disappointing when you have two of the greatest stars of all time back together again.

Godzilla x Kong: A New Empire Now in theaters.
