Another sequel – and this will be a common theme here – sees the return of plucky seafaring teenager Moana alongside the demigod Maui, played once again by Dwayne Johnson. Johnson, who is also a producer, has been vocal about how important the world of “Moana” is to him and his passion for bringing his culture to the big screen.

3 Mufasa: The Lion King

Award-winning director plays iconic father

While a “Lion King” prequel about Simba’s father may seem like Disney is taking too many risks with the intellectual property, the fact that Barry Jenkins is directing it garners a lot of respect and interest. The Oscar winner spoke of his love for Mufasa and his desire to bring a lot of passion and a possible personal identity to the legendary leader. I’m also curious to see how the innovative technology used in the first film will have varying degrees of success. Will the animals finally be able to sing and dance?

Rachel Zegler rose to prominence in Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story,” playing one of Disney’s original and most popular princesses. What I’m saying is that there are a lot of question marks as to how to bring this nostalgic and rather dated story into acceptable modern times, and it would take seeing it firsthand to really determine if it actually works. Nonetheless, Ziegler is a talented individual who is sure to bring a lot of emotion and power to the famous princess.

Little boy meets aliens in original story

This is the first (and only) movie on this list to feature a new story and characters we’ve never seen before! Elio is described as a loser with an active imagination who one day is transported into space, where comic misunderstandings occur. It gave the vibe of Onward, Strange World, and Elemental as I anticipated the immersive world filled with colorful creatures that awaited me.

6 Moana

More vivid shots

In addition to the animated sequel, Moana will also get a live-action remake, with Dwayne Johnson and Aly Cravalho reprising their voice roles. While it may seem a bit early to remake a recent beautiful and thrilling film, the catchy songs and dynamic visuals should make it worthy of a repeat. I’m not sure how they made Heihei and Kakamora more interesting, though.

7 Zootopia 2

The animals go crazy again

Another sequel on the list, Zootopia 2, will be released late next year, likely due in part to the success of the Disney+ anthology series based on the first film. The original played cleverly with the buddy cop trope and featured some striking voice acting, including Idris Elba and J.K. Simmons. I’m just not sure how many people are excited to return to this world compared to the other movies on this list.
