Jim Ryan says PS2 sales are 160 million units, but it may not be that simple

This is obviously the closest to the official word we’re getting on the matter, as Sony itself may not share the final number, but that doesn’t mean it’s 100% accurate. Industry analyst Daniel Ahmad analyzed PS2 sales in detail in a recent tweet, looking at various sales reports for both the PS2 and PS3 to figure out how many consoles may have been sold. I won’t get into all the boring math, you can read it yourself in the full tweet, but based on total reported hardware sales, PS2 sales are likely between 158.6 and 161.8 million units.

Again, obviously that’s not a hard number because it’s a bit of a range, although it’s broadly consistent with what Ryan shared. The main point is that even if the console only sells 155 million, it’s still the best-selling console of all time, and likely will be for a long time to come. Currently, the Nintendo Switch is the third best-selling console with 139 million units sold, so it would need to sell another 16 million units to take the top spot. If Nintendo counts the much-rumored but as-yet-unconfirmed Switch 2 as part of the same library as the regular DS and 3DS together (making it the second best-selling console), it’s likely to take over PS2. However, we’ll just have to wait until Nintendo says anything.
