Tekken 8 Fans have been asking game director Katsuhiro Harada to put a Waffle House stage in the game, but as much as you might want it, Harada doesn’t think it’ll be easy.
I think it’s safe to say that the Tekken community can be a little weird at times. One of its latest requests is to add US food chain Waffle House as a stage. Yes, Waffle House is the basis for the Waffle House Index, a real metric that tells you how severe a weather-based disaster is based on the capabilities of any given Waffle House. When a fan asked Harada to add a Waffle House stage to Tekken 8, the game maker actually responded, writing: “Well I’ll only ask about this request once. Why do some communities ask Am I sending a request for ‘Waffle House’? Please be sure to explain the basis for the request, including the original story, history, and context. I’m looking forward to an explanation from someone more knowledgeable.”

Many fans did respond seriously to Harada, explaining how the Waffle House was often the site of actual boxing matches, as documented in several viral videos, for one reason or another.Harada thanked the fans for their explanation and said wrote “I know a lot of people are asking for it, but, I think you’re missing the important point, the restaurant owns the trademark and the restaurant’s rights, so if the restaurant chain headquarters refuses to accept my suggestion, that’s not going to happen.”

Trademarks are obviously an annoying and fickle thing, and personally, it’s funny, I don’t think Waffle House would happily sign away its brand rights just to appear in a video game. But something even stranger happened! Tekken 7 does have Negan from The Walking Dead among all the characters, but I guess this one is easier to organize. In the meantime, you can look forward to playing as Eddy Gordo next week, as he’s getting early access to the game via the Playable Character Year One Pass.
