fall
- split note. I’ve been trying a lot of AI-powered voice note apps, and this one might be the best yet. You just talk, and the app turns your unorganized thoughts into well-formatted notes—and you can switch them back to your notes at any time.
- moscow gentleman. love towels Book is a time-honored TV series starring Ewan McGregor as a count who is under house arrest in a luxury hotel, and I swear it’s more exciting than it sounds, and it looks like it’s doing pretty well. I might even pay Paramount Plus for this.
- anxious generation,Jonathan Haidt. remember That Atlantic story Regarding the impact of cell phones and social media on children that went viral a few weeks ago? This is the book version. I’m not always a fan of Haidt’s ideas or way of thinking, but so far I view this book as a series of conversation starters about being a parent (and a child, and a person) in the modern world. There’s a lot to chew on here.
- Steve! (Martin) A two-part documentary. This doc is over three hours long, which is a lot of time for Steve Martin. But this is Steve Martin! It’s a conceit to some extent that this is a documentary about no one really knowing the main character, but it’s still an in-depth look at a very interesting guy.
- Sigma operating system. It’s a browser full of interesting ideas about how browsers work. Recently, the company launched a series of artificial intelligence features for searching and summarizing the web. As a person who publishes articles on the Internet, I feel a lot. As a user, it’s very useful.
- believers. A Netflix show about startups, religion, fraud, marketing and the power of faith, pretending to make it, crime, cops, more crime and more cops? Yes, I will be watching this show on Netflix this weekend.
- Spotify course. Every time Spotify launches a new product, I have two thoughts. First, Oh no, how would this further break the Spotify UI? Then, secondly, Haha, I might actually use this. This week’s contestants: video and audio education courses. So far it’s only available in the UK, but I actually think I’d use it if it came out.
- Spider-Man: Spider-Man Stories. A full-length film in a seven-minute short. The animation style in the Spider-Man: Universe movies continues to blow me away, and this story about anxiety and communication is an incredibly powerful one. It’s all for a good cause!
- 8Bitdo Commodore 64 Keyboard. Thanks to everyone who emailed last week after my request for the keyboard! I’m considering silent switches and Logitech MX Keys, but my heart already belongs to this $110 device: a retro beige keyboard with all the style and customization it deserves.
screen sharing
Jesse David Fox I don’t know, he probably knows more about comedy than anybody. He is vulture (our friend at Vox Media) about comedy; he wrote a book about comedy that he happily calls comedy book;He hosts very entertaining and sometimes profound podcasts nice one; He just turned that podcast into a Peacock special launching this week called Good shows: shows about jokes. It’s about Mike Birbiglia, who I love, but also about what it means to be funny, creative, and just like a human being.
I asked Jesse to share his home screen, partly because I wanted to know if comedy apps were a thing, but also to see how a person does his job – constantly watching, listening, reading, discovering, talking And dissecting interesting stuff – actually finding all of that stuff.
Here’s Jesse’s home screen, along with some information about the apps he uses and why:
Telephone: iPhone 13 Mini, but I don’t like it. I do like that it’s not that big, but I swear my next phone won’t be an iPhone.
wallpaper: The lock screen is a picture of Art Shea. My home screen is Joel Meyerowitz. Aren’t they great? I met both of them at a photography exhibition a few years ago.
app: Calendar, Photos, Camera, Apple Notes, Settings, Weather, Clock, SevenBell, Phone, Yelp, Peacock, Messages, Marvel Unlimited.
Generally speaking, these are the apps I use and use well.Weather, notes, camera, and podcast apps (I listen to a lot of podcasts for research nice one) is what I use most. I’ve been checking Slack and Instagram, but would have preferred it to be more challenging for me to search for them.
Recently two apps were moved to the homepage: 1.) Peacock so I can play with it constantly nice one Especially for increased view counts, and 2.) Marvel Unlimited. I recently started reading comics. I really like some of the MCU movies and shows, so I thought maybe I’d like the source code. I like it so much! Love that Groot.
I also asked Jesse to share some things that interest him right now. This is what he sent back:
- Watch content. During the pandemic, YouTube piqued my interest in watches. On TikTok, I get a lot of services pawn star Edit, I love it.Then I discovered that all the clips were actually on YouTube, so I don’t have to worry about TikTok destroying my brain. After a few weeks, I started running out pawn star Suggested clips and YouTube Antiques Roadshow clip,I love so much.one of the most famous Antiques Roadshow The clip involves an elderly veteran Received Ridiculous Assessment of His Rolex, I like that.Maybe because I watched it a few times and sent it to people, YouTube started recommending from Hour and Teddy Belshazzar. A few years later, my Instagram feed is now filled with nothing but photos of old watches and questionable people trading in watches I could never afford. (If you can afford it and want my advice, feel free to get in touch.) I also have a lot of theories about a giant conspiracy involving all these content creators, so I mostly spend my time trying to unravel that conspiracy.
- clips Attention game podcast. I love watching two people talk about something they both know very well, whether I’m familiar with the subject or not. I watch and play basketball, but LeBron James and JJ Redick’s new podcast is often beyond my comprehension. Still, I think it’s really fun to see LeBron act like a giant fool defending the reverse pick-and-roll. That said, I couldn’t watch the full episode because it was actually too boring.
- Newcomer. Lauren Lapkus and Nicole Byer are polar opposites on the podcast, having no clue what they’re talking about each season (currently the Batman movies), but how they support each other’s confusions and whimsical missteps Read, it’s very cute. The movies they watch.
- after midnight and Live dinner time. I love comedians and I love watching people cook, but what I love most about both shows is how often things go wrong. The comedian messes up or intentionally breaks the rules, and after midnight Host Tyler Tomlinson was a little annoyed with them, but most people, including me, were laughing.exist data transport layerDavid Chang really messed up the cooking, much more than is normal on a cooking show. Then, in the best episodes, guests find ways to become agents of chaos in their own right. A lot of late night TV is neat and organized. It’s interesting to see people being relatively free.

“Discovered a new macro tracker/food journal that I love – food standards. It has the best AI feature I’ve seen in this category: it guesses the approximate caloric/nutritional value of a meal, so if you’re out for breakfast and don’t want to try to break down every ounce of eggs benedict , the app will help you get a rough estimate and add it to your diary. ” —Nick

About once a year, I stumble across an NPR Tiny Desk video, realize Tiny Desk is the best thing on YouTube, and then spend days or months watching dozens of videos. (This time, it’s Justin Timberlake’s latest appearance ) To me, that’s everything that’s so delightful about the internet, all in one place: it’s low-tech and well-made, silly and intimate, but still super professional, and honestly, it feels like I’m in the room have olivia rodrigo or Cast lion king or receptionist.Yeah, obviously, of course I watch Taylor Swift Every time I fall into it again.
