what you need to know
- Users can now use ChatGPT without registering an account, which is in line with OpenAI’s goal of making AI tools widely accessible.
- Without an account, OpenAI can collect more training data, potentially improving AI models.
- While ChatGPT can be used without an account, registration is required to access paid services and features such as DALL-E.
If you’ve been hesitant to share personal information to chat with ChatGPT, OpenAI is now removing that barrier for you.
OpenAI’s free artificial intelligence platform ChatGPT will no longer require you to register, the company said in a blog post. Our goal is to make AI tools like ChatGPT accessible to everyone, so now you can get started without the hassle of creating an account.
If you’re happy with that, not requiring an account means OpenAI has access to more training data. It might also encourage more people to sign up and subscribe to get better access to GPT-4, rather than sticking with the older GPT-3.5 model that free users typically get.
“We may use the information you provide to ChatGPT to improve our models for everyone,” OpenAI said.
But if you’re wary of model training as a whole, you can still opt out even without an account.Just click the little question mark to the right of the text box, then click set upand then turn off the “Improve the model for everyone” switch.
Since ChatGPT debuted in late 2022, those who want to learn more will have to create an OpenAI account. OpenAI then began offering paid subscriptions to unlock more powerful services like DALL-E 3.
While OpenAI allows anyone to use its artificial intelligence chatbot without an account, you’ll still need to sign up if you’re eyeing a paid service like DALL-E. Selecting a GPT-4 subscription will redirect you to the service’s registration page.
To save and view chat history, share chats, or have voice conversations, you also need an account.
OpenAI said it has strengthened protections for users without accounts, such as limiting prompts and image generation in certain categories. However, the company has not yet explained what these categories are.
If you’re interested in ChatGPT, this might be a good way to test it out without handing over too much information.
