MOUNT PLEASANT, Texas — Spectrum is working to bring internet coverage to rural areas in East Texas.
According to media reports, State Senator Bryan Hughes and State Representative Cole Hefner joined Spectrum officials in Mount Pleasant today to celebrate the 2019 New Year’s Day event aimed at serving all of Texas. The investment in broadband is being delivered to rural communities in the eastern part of the state, which is one of the most underserved areas in the United States.
“East Texas is a land of opportunity, but in today’s digital world, fully realizing that opportunity depends on reliable internet connectivity,” said Senator Hughes. “Today, we are working with Spectrum and community stakeholders to celebrate the significant progress of bringing high-speed internet to unserved homes and businesses in East Texas – a win for much of rural Texas. “
The company’s construction work is well underway in East Texas, with more than 9,700 homes and small businesses already connected in Titus, Franklin, Red River and Hopkins counties, according to a news release. Other work continues. Projects are also planned to serve residents in parts of Camp, Morris and Wood counties.
“We are working hard to build out our network to reach some of the hardest-to-serve locations in Texas,” said Mike Matson, regional vice president of Texas field operations for Charter Communications, Inc. “With the need so clear and urgent, Spectrum is doubling down on investing more resources with a focus on connecting rural areas across Texas, especially in the eastern part of the state.”
Execution of Spectrum’s accelerated rural deployment plan depends on several factors, such as permitting and cooperation from local utility companies, Matson said.
“It takes a village to deliver internet service to these rural areas,” Mattson said. “As homes are increasingly spaced apart, construction crews must approach several power poles to reach one homeowner.”
“Expanding broadband infrastructure to rural communities requires extensive coordination and resources,” said Rep. Hefner. “Spectrum’s connectivity services will open new doors for East Texas homes and businesses, and we look forward to having all East Texans connected to the internet as soon as possible.”
