- OnePlus is rolling out a new AI eraser feature update for its phones. The update is available for the OnePlus 12 and OnePlus 12R in India, but it should reach other phones and more regions this month.
- The AI Eraser feature is part of the Stock Photos app and is available through Oxygen OS updates. This feature requires an internet connection to work.
- AI Eraser works best when unwanted objects in the image are clear and segmented.
OnePlus recently announced a new AI eraser feature for its smartphones. It’s the company’s first generative AI feature, and OnePlus is chasing peers like Samsung and Google, which offer similar “Magic Eraser” tools. The first set of updates to the feature are now rolling out to OnePlus devices, and here’s how AI Eraser works on OnePlus phones.
How to use AI Eraser on OnePlus smartphones
AI Eraser is currently planned for OnePlus 12, OnePlus 12R, OnePlus 11, OnePlus Open, and OnePlus Nord CE 4. The feature comes via the Oxygen OS 14 update, which upgrades the device’s stock (OnePlus) Photos app. We’ve already spotted the update for the OnePlus 12 and OnePlus 12R in India, but it should be available for other devices and more regions as well.
To use AI Eraser on a compatible phone with the new update installed, follow these steps:
- Open photo app. You will receive a new disclaimer that you must accept in order to use the AI Eraser feature. If you choose to use only the basic functions, the AI Eraser feature is not available.
- Navigate to the image you want to edit.
- click edit button in the bottom toolbar.
- you will see a new Artificial Intelligence Eraser Used with other editing options. click it.
- When you first access the feature, you have to click through several terms and conditions dialog boxes to access the feature.
- AI Eraser gives you two options for selecting unwanted objects:
- Smart Lasso: Circle one or more people to remove them from the photo.
- Color: Paint on people or objects to remove them from the photo.
- You can select any option to select unwanted objects. In my limited experience, the Smart Lasso tool works better than Paint Over because there’s less chance of thickly pointing objects outside of what you want to select.
- The application will try to identify the boundaries of your selected objects and show you the results of deleted objects.
- There is a quick compare button for you to compare results.
- Depending on your default Photos app settings, you can save the image as the original or as a copy.
Is the AI eraser on OnePlus phones easy to use?
I tried the AI eraser feature on a few photos with mixed results. Use the Smart Lasso tool to identify object boundaries better than the Paint tool.
If the object’s boundaries are well recognized, object deletion is clean and can pass off the original object. If you are not satisfied with the boundary recognition you can try to get better results again, doing this did improve some results for me.
Of course, there are limitations. If you try to remove large objects, the AI model will fill in the gaps more freely, and you can’t blame it for that. Boundary recognition isn’t perfect either, and if your object shares a similar color with other objects around it, you’ll need a few tries to get it right.
For best results, you want a clear, segmented image where the object you want to remove is not the main focus subject. It helps if the object you want to delete also has a color that contrasts with the background.
The AI eraser feature on OnePlus smartphone Oxygen OS is powered by OPPO’s AndesGPT generative AI model. It doesn’t run on the device, so when your images are uploaded to the server, you need an active internet connection to do any generative AI editing. Any photo can be edited, just like I did with the photos I took on a different phone during a recent trip to Singapore.
I prefer on-device object removal, at least on a powerful contemporary flagship like the OnePlus 12. This will make the feature easier to use as people can use it offline, without the need for an internet connection, and relieve any stress. Private issues. Now, if you want to use this feature, you have to face the fact that the photos you select will be uploaded to the server for processing. I do appreciate that OnePlus allows you to opt out of that feature and use the Photos app in its “Basic” mode, although I can’t see the switch beyond the first initialization screen. I would prefer to be able to toggle this feature on and off.
