Take an unusual step Dragon’s Dogma 2far away from safety the way, is a creature unlike anything else in the game. The Sphinx is a unique beast in that she does not challenge the player through combat; Instead, she’s challenging you to a show of wits. This is a series of riddles to test your knowledge of the game and generalize Dragon’s Dogma 2of design, including its successes and setbacks. I can’t help but love it.

draw inspiration from classical greek Version of the mythical creature the Sphinx Dragon’s Dogma 2 The task is to answer confusing riddles. There are five in total that can be solved in any order, all of which force you to think about specific systems in the game. To talk about why I think these work or don’t work, I’m going to have to spoil the solution, so if you haven’t come face to face with the creature yet, head to the mountain shrine in the north to learn about the ancient battlefield before reading any further.
The three riddles The Sphinx challenges you to solve are fairly simple, but helpful in understanding the key pillars of the game. For example, “Puzzle of the Eye” tricks you into fighting a dungeon when you could have completed it within seconds of walking through the entrance. Solving this requires you to pay close attention to your surroundings, which is something to always keep in mind in a game where there are valuable secrets hidden under every rock.
In the meantime, the crazy mystery reminds you that your piece (NPC Party Member) is your best friend and is always there to help you. Finally, Puzzle of Faith is especially fascinating because it tests you, asking you to sacrifice a rare item without promising you’ll get it back. Having just obtained the rare port crystal from a previous riddle, I put my money where my mouth was and gave it to the Sphinx. The Sphinx rewarded my faith by doubling what I delivered and returning it to me. through this matter, Dragon’s Dogma 2 A reminder that you need to take risks and be willing to sacrifice, but your faith will often be rewarded.
But what I really want to talk about are the two remaining riddles of the Sphinx, the Riddle of Wisdom and the Riddle of Memory. These are the toughest of challenges, but one that succeeds once again rewards players who fully engage with the game’s world and game design. Dragon’s Dogma 2, and another that will leave even the most dedicated players scratching their heads. The memory mystery seems to be the scariest because it puts you in a difficult situation. You have 7 days in the game to return to the site where you found the first Explorer Token. This is a challenge that no guide can help you solve. There are 240 Explorer Tokens in the game, and each player will find their first token in a different location. Memory Mystery asks you, “Are you really paying attention to what you’re doing?” It’s tough, but unfair, and successfully mastering the challenge is extremely satisfying.
On the other hand, I absolutely hated Wisdom. The Sphinx tells you to find her parents, which is mysterious, but these are riddles after all. The problem is that the solution is very specific and difficult to figure out, requiring you to hire a Pawn called a “Sphinx Parent” and bring them to Sphinx. The pieces in question must be summoned from a specific type of rift (i.e. a friendship rift). There are only a handful of these on the game map. While on the surface the riddles of wisdom don’t seem any more complicated or unfair than other riddles, I don’t think that’s entirely true.
Every riddle outside of the Puzzle of Wisdom requires you to understand how the game wants you to interact with it. You can give the Sphinx any item or show any piece for Conviction and Madness respectively. Even Memory Mysteries require you to recall something you actually did. However, solving the puzzle of wisdom requires you to eventually find the cracks in friendship, which requires luck, searching every corner of the map, or a guide. Even the mythical Sphinx just asked a riddle that everyone can answer based on life experience! Oedipus doesn’t have to explore all of Greece to solve this problem.
Dragon’s Dogma 2While exploration is where most of the fun of the game lies, it’s not a game that generally forces you to do everything. The Sphinx is a representation of the game developers testing you, and most of the time it works and reflects the joyful friction of the entire game. But The Mystery of Wisdom fails to achieve this goal. This is just one of five riddles that represent a small amount of negative friction that does exist in the game, but the experience is still jarring.
