- Following a limited launch in March, Google Wallet is now rolling out support for Apple Wallet Pass to more users.
- The feature is not working properly as users are encountering errors while downloading passes saved in Apple’s “.pkpass” format.
- Support for Apple’s standard pass format joins Google’s efforts to bring more boarding passes to its Wallet app.
Google Wallet appears to be activating support for Apple Wallet Pass for more users, but an issue was discovered early on.
According to 9to5Google , the ability for Google Wallet users to access important “.pkpass” files has become more widely available to more users. This file format is the format used by Apple for digital passes.
Unfortunately, the publication discovered a frustrating problem with Wallet’s support for Apple formats: not all app It is supported on Android.
We found that the “Add to Apple Wallet” option never appeared in some Android apps. The service does not provide users with the appropriate Apple file formats so that they can put them into Google Wallet for safekeeping. Another error occurred while trying to add some minor league baseball tickets to the wallet.
The error prompts users to try to open the link in Safari (the default browser on iOS), but Android users cannot do this.
The report adds that if the problem becomes too troublesome, users can use their iPhone to transfer passes to their Android devices. The publication notes that users can “share passes from iPhone to Android devices via messaging and other apps,” which will give them the “.pkpass” they need to import into Google Wallet.
More users should start to notice that Android support for Apple’s Digital Pass format is available now (April 5) and beyond. What’s more, apps should also start complying with this newfound support, but it may take time to iron out bugs.
Android users started noticing support for the Apple Pass format in March, albeit in smaller numbers. This support has been around for a long time, with Google saying back in 2022 that it was working on the feature. However, no evidence of the feature being developed was found until 2023.
The latest support for Wallet is just one of many, as Google has recently added additional support for getting boarding passes directly from Gmail. Users who receive movie and flight confirmation emails can now easily put those passes into Google Wallet. The update also includes archiving old passes, keeping important content clean and concise.
