long story short

  • Google is preparing a new Find feature for the Phone app on Pixel devices.
  • This feature is designed to search for unknown numbers online.
  • The way it works is very different from the phone book app Truecaller.

Google appears to be preparing to launch a new Find tool in the mobile app for Pixel users. The feature will let Pixel users identify callers by searching unknown numbers through various apps on their phones.

It sounds like Truecaller integration, but Pixel’s Lookup works completely differently. When you tap an unknown number in the Recents tab of the Pixel Phone app, you’ll see the Find option. Selecting it opens a list of apps on your phone that can handle web searches. The Google Search app will also appear in the list and when you select it, search results for unknown numbers will be displayed.

Google’s purpose appears to be to help you determine whether you’ve received a call from a business whose phone number is listed online. Unlike phone book app Truecaller, Google’s new lookup feature for Pixels can’t be used to identify calls from personal numbers that don’t have an online presence.

The feature was discovered by an informant Assembly debugging (pass Piunica.com). It’s already rolling out to Pixel users in Japan with a March 2024 update, and now appears to be rolling out elsewhere. According to the tipster, the option appeared on the Google Phone app beta version 127.0.620688474, so the official release of the stable version of the app may not be far away.
