what you need to know
- X has not yet confirmed its plans to launch the “Ear” and “Ear a” headphones on April 18.
- The company said the name change will help it better focus on the “products” and “unique experiences” it offers consumers.
- Little information about these devices has been leaked, but the presence of an “a” tag suggests that it might fall into the budget range like the Phone 2a.
Nothing is confirmed yet, but consumers will receive two earbuds from the London-based company later this month.
The company posted on X today (April 5) that people should prepare to see Nothing “Ear” and “Ear a” on April 18. Essentially, the newly released “Ear” is the successor to the Ear 2 launched in 2018. March 2023. The post adds that the upcoming device is “the ultimate iteration of Nothing Audio” and “reflects the culmination of three years of design and innovation.”
This also (obviously) brings with it a strange name change, which makes it look like we’re getting a reboot of the series. There was no explanation that the reset of its naming strategy, which included removing serial numbers, was to better focus on “products and unique experiences.”
The company reiterated that it will continue to build quality devices for consumers and put user preference above price.
We started Nothing with Audio in 2021, and since launching our first product, we’ve continued to refine our design and engineering with every new feature we add to our suite of audio products. Nothing started teasing its new earbud devices at the end of March, with the teasers provided making it look like we were continuing with the Ear 3. This article features a small tree frog jumping over a black beetle. The latter is used to promote the Ear 2 ahead of its 2023 launch.
The most interesting development is that we will receive an “Ear A” to accompany the so-called “flagship-level” headphones. With the “a” moniker, the second pair of headphones seems to follow the Nothing Phone 2a line: a budget phone with a premium design and some minor software/hardware changes to keep the price down.
We don’t have much to dig into as nothing has leaked much information about either device. We can think of the Ear 2 as a device with refined sound quality and improved ANC capabilities. The device also comes with a smaller charging case, making it easier to carry. Internally, it features 11.6mm custom drivers that deliver rich sound.
It remains to be seen where “Nothing” will go after its release in 2023. Luckily, we only have a few weeks to wait.
