“Fantastic Four” Julia Garner as Silver Surfer

We recently got a look at the star cast of Marvel Studios’ Fantastic Four, which may be the most important movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in quite some time. However, we’re curious about the antagonist in the long-in-the-making movie. Well, we can now confirm that Silver Surfer is part of the package.

Deadline shared the news on April 3, confirming that Ozark‘s Julia Garner will be playing the famous (and pivotal) Marvel character, albeit in the Sarah Barr version. Not fan favorite Norrin Radd. It’s no surprise that Marvel fans might be scratching their heads right now, but we’re here to give you a quick answer.

Comic book readers know Sarah-Bal as the immortal Empress of Zan-Ra and the eventual lover of the classic Silver Surfer, Norrin Ladd, who became the Galactus Harbinger (in the second installment of the Fox film introduced in ) in exchange for his (and Shalla-Bal’s) planet being spared. That’s the gist, but of course her history with Rad is much more complicated. Like most Marvel characters, She also went through multiple iterations, one of the highlights being her temporary accession to the Silver Surfer’s powers in a separate continuity in the Earth-X miniseries.

Of course, Deadline could make some small mistakes, and maybe the film will end up focusing on Ladd’s surfer and only include Shalabar’s humanoid alien ruler form. There’s a good chance she’ll be the main Silver Surfer, though, it all depends on the Marvel Universe’s penchant for shaking up traditional storylines from time to time, plus we think Sarah Barr deserves a better representation in the comics as the Silver Surfer By.

Barring new delays, Fantastic Four should soon be in front of cameras with Matt Shakman at the helm of WandaVision and a July 25, 2025 release date, in line with DC Studios’ The Superman reboot is damn close. The current plan is to launch Phase 6 of the Marvel Universe after “Captain America: Brave New World” and “Thunderbolt” wrap up Phase 5 early next year.
