The whole time I was playing Final Fantasy VII Reborn —The second part of a planned trilogy FF7 Remastered — I can’t stop thinking about replaying the first game from 1997.When the credits roll rebirthI made a difficult decision: how Play the original version? There is no shortage of options. The game has been ported to most modern platforms, and I still have the original PlayStation discs (all three). But ultimately I settled on a beloved but often forgotten piece of video game hardware – the PlayStation Vita. do you know? This little thing is still definitely the rule.
My rekindled love affair with Vita is because FF7, I’ve been finishing the game off and on. But it also blossomed from there. Not only had I forgotten how great this handheld was at playing classic games (especially RPGs), but I also forgot how many great indie games it had. sound shape Still one of the best music games ever made, hotline miami, fortressand Fez Perfect for Vita.I reacquainted myself with games like Doomsday Tactics Tokyo Jungle Mobile and the first streamlined skateboard action Orolioli.
All of these games feel great on the Vita because Sony has absolutely pushed the envelope with the hardware. It’s small and light, as a handheld device should be, but not at the expense of functionality. It has all the joysticks and buttons you’d expect from a PlayStation device, and except that the joysticks are smaller, it operates just like a PlayStation controller. It even offers a touch screen for the few games that really take advantage of it, like football games kill time. It’s basically the design of the Switch before the Switch came along, but sturdier because it’s a solid device. This is the ideal compromise between comfort and performance.
Even now, in the golden age of handheld devices – think: Playdate, Analogue Pocket, Steam Deck (and its clones), and Switch – the Vita still stands out in this regard. The only one that really comes close is the Switch Lite, as it shrinks and solidifies the original design. But if I want to play a bunch of different games on the go, including those that require traditional control schemes, the Vita is once again my go-to.I’ve been playing recently Glow: an electronic symphony While riding an exercise bike, it’s hard to imagine doing it comfortably on the Steam Deck.
Of course, there are downsides to using a Vita in 2024. Mostly it has to do with getting new games. The Vita is not a viable platform for modern developers, and even grabbing older (physical) versions is difficult. Whenever I’m thrifting, I see a lot of Nintendo DS games, but very few Vita cartridges, and while you can buy digital games in the Vita store, Sony makes the process more tedious than it should be.Still, it was worth my while to poke around the various menus in order to make a purchase parasitism evewhich I plan to play immediately after FF7. Unfortunately, classic games are mostly straight ports without any of the quality-of-life adjustments found in modern re-releases.
Indeed, the Vita is a good lesson that just because a company has pivoted away from gaming platforms doesn’t mean you have to. There’s nothing particularly dated about the hardware or its games. Since there are plenty of Vita games that I never got around to playing, as well as older PSone games that I’ve always wanted to replay, I don’t feel the pain of choice. Within a few weeks, I already had a queue.back parasitism evemy list includes the original Shui Gu Zhuan and persona game. These aren’t games exclusive to the Vita – they just feel better there.
