For Drew, the film is deeply personal, almost autobiographical.As a trans woman, she feels connected to the real world clown 2019 movies.Along with outcast criminal Arthur Fleck, played by Joaquin Phoenix, she discovers something about “city structures and government systems” in the film [that] Total failure.My family system failed me,” she told type. “My government still keeps letting me down, and for some reason I still have to pay them taxes next month. I connect with this core element of just wanting to make art and put myself out there. In a place that’s so tightly guarded , and how can I do this in a system that is mostly just propaganda?”
Superheroes are “great, majestic, bold, colorful archetypes” in whom people have reflected themselves. As a lifelong Batman fan, People’s clown Drew is allowed to tell her trans story, something she herself only really dealt with in 2019. While using comedy to explore some “faulty ideas” about herself, she eventually realized that she “not only had to deal with being a trans woman in alternative comedy, but how that defined my identity.”
Drew has been equally candid about the criticism he’s received over the past two years. There have been criticisms – mostly from “well-intentioned allies” – questioning whether now is a good time to give a queer villain the title of a movie. To her, she’s already a bad person, so just accept it. “I’ve been villainized and politicized just because of who I am, and I’ve been turned into a symbol,” she said. “Some people think that just because I was assigned a gender at birth that I didn’t match and then accepted that, that I am somehow a political activist or a symbol of their oppression. To me, At this point in my life, I can only make a movie about a queer villain because I am so completely villainized and my community is so so so completely villainized. So it was important to me to do that.”
