long story short

  • Google apps for Android are ready to get Gemini switching functionality.
  • The new feature will allow Android users to use Gemini without having to download a dedicated Android app that will forcefully replace Google Assistant.

Google launched a dedicated Assistant app on Android in February to replace Gemini. However, it seems the search giant isn’t done with its “Gemini makeover” of Android phones yet. If you haven’t downloaded the Gemini app before, Google is planning to give AI chatbots a primary space within the Google app.

According to informants Assembly debuggingdiscovery (via Piunica.com), Android users will soon see the Gemini switch in the Google app on their devices. This is similar to how Google offers Gemini on its iOS app. Switch to Gemini in the Google app and you can start interacting with the AI by typing, talking, or sharing images. So, essentially, you move from the traditional Google search and discovery interface to the Gemini interface.

For users who want to try Gemini but don’t want to lose Google Assistant functionality, the new option in the Google app for Android actually makes a lot of sense. Currently, if you download the Gemini app on your Android device, you have to choose to remove Google Assistant and just use Gemini as your primary AI guide on your phone. Switching to Gemini within Google applications will overcome this limitation.

There’s no word yet on when the feature will roll out to the Google app for Android, but you can see it in action via the above video shared by the tipster.
