A total solar eclipse occurred in North America on Monday night, a rare event for most people. The competition starts on April 8 at 9:13 pm (IST) and ends on April 9 at 2 am (IST).
At 10:09 pm IST, the darkest part of the moon’s shadow falls over the Pacific Ocean about 998 kilometers south of the Republic of Kiribati.A total solar eclipse will only be visible in some areas United States, Mexico and Canada.
Some Caribbean countries, Colombia, Venezuela, Spain, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Portugal and Iceland may see a partial solar eclipse.

In this video posted on social media platform X, the total solar eclipse can be seen during the flight. “It really makes us realize how small and insignificant we actually are,” one user wrote.
In the same post, another user said, “Man this is so beautiful…I could look at it all day.”
@PhysInHistory explains the rare event where the moon aligns perfectly with the sun. The reason this happens is a surprising coincidence—even though the moon is much smaller than the sun, it is also much closer to Earth. This means they appear to be roughly the same size in the sky. But it gets even more fun! The Moon’s orbit around the Earth is not a perfect circle; its path is more like an ellipse. This means that sometimes it is closer to Earth and sometimes further away. This affects how we view solar eclipses—sometimes they are total, sometimes they are partial.
A one-in-a-trillion coincidence makes a total solar eclipse possible:
The diameter of the moon is 400 times smaller than that of the sun, but it is also 400 times closer to the earth.#SolarEclipse2024 pic.twitter.com/B5Z4g4XOyy

Fortunately, the size of the Sun has not changed much over time, which is crucial for these eclipses to continue to occur. But there’s a twist: The moon is slowly moving away from Earth. Eventually, in billions of years, this drift will completely prevent a total solar eclipse from occurring.
Another post on X shared photos and videos taken by photographers and social media users in Cleveland, Montreal, New York, Dallas and more.

I will never forget April 8, 2024. Anyone who knows me will know that I am fascinated by astronomy, the universe, planets, and eclipses. This is truly a blessing for all of us in DFW witnessing this spectacular total solar eclipse. Billions of people will never experience it. What… pic.twitter.com/VgRG1mE2RC

Instagram user @stevendavisjr shared in the post, “Solar Eclipse 2024 in North America! 🌑🌞 April 8, 2024. Even though the weather wasn’t cooperative, it was still pretty spectacular to witness an 88% partial solar eclipse from my yard. Shot with partial cloud cover Made some interesting photos and made the sunspots easier to see. Here are 8 of my best photos, a collage and a still frame time-lapse of the last 24 photos. Check out my story to learn more Time-lapse content.”
Another user on Instagram shared a video Dallas, Texas She wrote in the caption: “Today’s total eclipse in Dallas. This is the best solar eclipse coverage I’ve seen all day. I felt the same way watching it. It’s so unreal.”
In the video, one user said, “She had the perfect shot and experience.” Another added, “I don’t even want to hug you guys, I climbed on the roof of my apartment and yeah it was like It’s just as exciting in the video.
