Next year’s iPhone 17 Pro will be the first iPhone to use TSMC’s 2nm process chipset, according to a new report today. TSMC announced the development of the 2nm process as early as 2022. At that time, there were rumors that the iPhone 17 Pro would be the first device to use this process chipset.
Now, it’s confirmed – anything can be “confirmed” through rumors. The 2nm process is expected to enter small-scale production for the first time at TSMC later this year, with mass production beginning in 2025, just in time for the release of the iPhone 17 Pro next fall.
Earlier this year, it was reported that Apple had contracted all of TSMC’s 2nm process, at least initially. In addition to the iPhone 17 Pro, the 2nm chip is apparently intended for future Apple Silicon Macs as well.
The next step after 2nm will be an enhanced version of the 2nm process, expected around the end of 2026, and then a jump to 1.4nm – if this report is accurate, of course.
The iPhone 16 series and iOS 18 are expected to launch later this year with a focus on artificial intelligence, but it looks like all AI processing (the on-device part) will have to be done without a 2nm chip this year.
