New DLC-sized Starfield mod finally lets you build giant mechs and transform outposts into “immersive space colonization simulators”

Starfield players have been dying to do something with mechs in the game for years, and aside from staring at the broken mechs littering the vast ruins of the settlement system, a new mod finally lets you build some of your own. But it does much more than that, trying to overhaul the game’s entire outpost system.

Yep, while we’re all getting caught up in the Fallout TV show hype and busy checking out a bunch of other cool things happening in the Bethesda series community this month, one modder has quietly decided to launch what’s sure to be The most ambitious mod for a game I’ve seen this year. I guess you never know what people are cooking.

The mod in question (thanks to IGN) is TankGirl444’s “TGs Gactic Colonies Expanse”. What does it do? Well, I’ll let them explain.

“This mod aims to be a complete rethink/change/add to the Outpost system, its production system and many other aspects,” the modder writes. “The idea is to turn the Outpost system into an immersive space colonization simulation device, using elements from the game’s core lore and story.”

So, what does that look like? Well, TankGirl444 has made a bunch of “new fully constructed buildings that are prefab and buildable,” some of which have functionality within your settlement, such as the Chunks franchise that earns you points (yeah , you read that right), and a classic sci-fi style biodome. The latter will let you “take part of any biome with you [you] enjoy any world [you’re] ”. So, plant lovers rejoice.

Beyond that, there’s a “complete farming system” that lets you “farm, craft and sell new fruits and vegetables” in addition to raising livestock. Farmville, enjoy it. To ensure there is a real population to feed, the mod allows you to hire, build, or recruit civilians, soldiers, and colonists for your colony.

The biggest addition, though, for those of us who aren’t too big into Old MacDonald roleplaying is that “mechs can now be crafted and added to outpost defenses,” so you can add some that look like they were committed during the Colonial War Add some atrocity stuff to your existing turret array along with the other security measures included in the mod.

The power of these new defenses ranges from “medium” to “superweapon”, and TankGirl444 suggests you might want to avoid building anything too powerful for fear of not ending up dominated by the OP protector.

They also seem to be hinting that they have plans to add a ton of other extras and features to the mod once Starfield’s elusive Creation Kit finally arrives, so there’s another reason to pay attention.
