One of the most surprising and exciting movie news so far this year is that writers Alex Garland and director Danny Boyle Returning to the world 28 days later.More than two decades since groundbreaking original zombie movie 17 years after follow-up, the pair are preparing to make 28 years later.
In an interview on the occasion of Garland’s latest film, civil wario9 asked him why now was the right time to return to the team that launched his career.
“Part of it has to do with the passage of time,” Garland told io9 via video chat. “It sounds stupid but you will be locked in. Originally I wrote 28 days later Almost like a joke. It’s adding the title to the title. You know, “12 hours later,” “the next day,” unless that’s the title. Then you’re stuck. [Laughs] You have to live with this.and 28 months later This seems odd considering the amount of time that has passed. and, After 28 weeks, Someone has already done it. So, unless we start moving towards centuries, our final time frame is 28 years. Enough time has passed to justify this right. “
But, of course, there are other important factors besides timing. “Danny was interested in doing it, the producers were interested in doing it, and I had an idea,” he said. “There was no idea that I was really interested in before this. It had been floated around. We would talk about it. Every five years or something it would be discussed, but I had no motivation to do it. I said, ‘Listen , if other people want to do it, that’s fine, but I don’t have anything. ” For some reason, that passage of time unlocked a certain concept in my mind, and then the movie came along, so, all of a sudden, it made sense. I said, “Okay. Well, I think I have an idea. ” I wrote it as a script and showed it to Danny and Andrew [Macdonald] and peter [Rice] Who were the producers and they said, ‘Okay, let’s do it. ‘”
Additionally, Garland confirmed that the general idea is that the series will become a trilogy, if audiences are willing to watch it. “The key to the idea was that the story didn’t fit naturally into a movie,” Garland said. “And there’s a possibility – we may not get the chance to do it – but a proper trilogy could be made. Not a series of sequels that are just effectively a retelling of the first thing in a slightly different form, but a real narrative. We don’t know if we’ll be able to do that because ultimately it has to do with market forces. Movies cost a lot of money. Even cheap movies cost a lot of money. You know, people talk about low budget, but it always A lot of money. So it really depends on whether people are willing to see future products after we’re successful.”
But either way, 28 years later Alex Garland and Danny Boyle’s work is coming soon. Eventually it will be released…almost 28 years after the original. A release date hasn’t been confirmed yet, but you’d have to guess that 2025 or 2026, which is 23 or 24 years after the first movie, is probably a good guess.
