AMD quietly launches Ryzen 7 8700F and Ryzen 5 8400F processors

AMD recently expanded the Ryzen 8000 series with the launch of the Ryzen 7 8700F and Ryzen 5 8400F processors. The chips were initially launched in China and were later added to AMD’s global website, indicating they will be available globally starting April 1. These new CPUs are built from the recent Zen 4-based Phoenix APUs, using TSMC’s 4nm node for Zen 4 mobile chips, but lack integrated graphics. However, the Ryzen 7 8700F does include an integrated Ryzen AI NPU, which can add functionality in the currently AI-dominated world and transfer it directly to the PC.

The company’s decision to launch these chips in China is in line with its strategy of offering Ryzen solutions at every price point in the market. While AMD didn’t initially reveal the full specs of these F-series models, and we did contact the company to ask, they declined to discuss them with us. Their listing on the website has now been updated with a full list of specs and features, everything except the price mentioned.

Ryzen 7 8700F adopts 8C/16T design, has 16MB L3 cache, and has the same TDP as Ryzen 7 8700G. While the base clock speed is 4.1 GHz, it can be boosted to 5.0 GHz; both base/boost clocks are 100 MHz lower than the 8700G. The Ryzen 5 8400F, meanwhile, is a slightly scaled-down version of the Ryzen 8600G APU, with 6C/12, 16MB L3 cache, and another 100 MHz lower base clock than the 8600G. Unlike the Ryzen 5 8400F, the Ryzen 7 8700F retains AMD’s Ryzen AI NPU, adding additional capabilities for generative AI.

The Ryzen 5 8400F can boost to 4.7 GHz, which is 300 MHz slower than the Ryzen 5 8600G. AMD also allows these new F-series chips to be overclocked, meaning users can increase the performance of these processors to match their G-series equivalents.

Pricing details haven’t been confirmed yet, but to remain competitive, AMD may need to price these CPUs lower than the 8700G and 8600G, as well as the Ryzen 7 7700 and Ryzen 5 7600. These CPUs offer (albeit very limited) integrated graphics and have dual-core L3 cache capacity and higher boost clocks than the 8000F series chips, so pricing needs to be considered wherever there is one.
