SELMA, Ala. (WSFA) – A multimillion-dollar project managed by Yellowhammer Networks LLC could bring broadband to the Black Belt starting in 2026.
The company will open a service center in Selma. After breaking ground a month ago, the city’s partial expansion is underway and is expected to cover at least 90 percent of homes within city limits.
Selma City Councilman Clay Carmichael said the area is long overdue for expansion.
“Our communities are underserved,” Carmichael said, later adding, “We’ve seen a lot of issues with internet access during COVID.”
Faster internet could enhance businesses in Selma, helping existing businesses expand and new businesses enter the area. The expansion will also provide easy access to education for K-12 and college students living in the area.
“It brings the world to Selma and our students,” said Selma University President Dr. Stanford Angeln. “They will receive a world-class education from their hometown.”
HBCU presidents are optimistic that broadband expansion can attract more enrollment and improve career readiness.
“We’ll be able to take advantage of the equipment that’s coming in to learn a variety of skills and get certifications that will make them job-ready on day one,” Angion said.
