long story short
- Google announced that OnePlus and OPPO phones will get Gemini-powered features such as summarization and AI toolbox.
- These smartphone brands also said they plan to be the first to launch Gemini Ultra-based AI features.
- In comparison, Google and Samsung use less powerful Gemini Nano and Gemini Pro AI models on their phones.
OnePlus and OPPO recently announced the launch of the AI Eraser feature on smartphones, which provides object erasure capabilities for photos. However, this feature is powered by the company’s own artificial intelligence model. Now, the BBK brand has revealed that AI features powered by Google’s Gemini model are coming to their devices soon.
Google announced at its Cloud Next event that OnePlus and OPPO phones will get Gemini-powered features such as news summaries, voice recorder summaries, “AI toolbox” and more. The Chinese brands have also hinted at AI capabilities that can generate social media content, ostensibly related to text or image generation.
The partnership doesn’t stop there, OPPO and OnePlus also announced that Gemini 1.0 Ultra, Google’s most powerful AI model, will be coming to their phones later in 2024. In fact, the companies say they “aim to be the first to launch features based on the Gemini Ultra platform on smartphones later this year.”
Gemini Ultra on mobile phones: A huge improvement in artificial intelligence capabilities?
The Samsung Galaxy S24 series and Google Pixel 8 Pro use a mix of Gemini Nano and Gemini Pro to implement artificial intelligence functions, but do not actually use Gemini Ultra. Therefore, OnePlus and OPPO adopting Ultra is indeed a landmark move, and theoretically hints at even more impressive AI capabilities.
Gemini Ultra is indeed Google’s most powerful AI model, but unlike Gemini Nano, which runs on the device, Ultra runs on Google’s own servers. This means that any future OnePlus/OPPO AI features powered by Gemini Ultra will require an internet connection.
Both smartphone brands also have some lofty long-term goals for artificial intelligence-generated content (AIGC):
In the next three to five years, OPPO and OnePlus plan to launch more than one hundred AIGC experiences and will continue to prioritize users’ needs to ensure that products are easy and intuitive.
The pair did not specify what percentage of these AI features will be powered by Google AI and how much will be powered by its in-house AI models.
Regardless, OnePlus and OPPO say more details about the Google partnership and supported devices will be revealed later this year.
