On December 11, Epic won a surprise victory over Google in federal court. The jury unanimously ruled that Google had transformed its Google Play app store and Google Play billing services into illegal monopolies. But what did Epic win? That’s yet to be decided by Judge James Donato, and today, we finally learned exactly what Epic thinks it deserves.
As you’ll see in the 16 pages of the proposed injunction and my bullet points below, Epic is asking for a lot – not only does it want to stop most of the potentially unfair conduct highlighted by Google during the trial, but it also proactively tries to stop Google the behavior of. Instantly bring third-party app stores and billing systems on par with Google Play and Google Play Billing.
Even though you might think it’s fair, a judge is unlikely to go that far. Today’s Epic filing is just the starting point for negotiations – Google has until May 2 to file a response, and then Judge Donato will hear from experts on both sides at a hearing on May 23. Google will also appeal when the district court case is completed.
