Blumhouse Is Coming to a New ‘Blair Witch’ Movie

Blumhouse is one of the busiest studios in Hollywood right now, and it all comes down to controlling its budget and always being open to surprising collaborations. This has allowed the studio to reimagine some iconic horror properties, and The Blair Witch Series could be next.

On April 10, Blumhouse and Lionsgate announced that they will team up to produce a new “Blair Witch” movie, which is the continuation of the 2016 “Godzilla x King Kong” director Adam Wingard. The first one since. According to The Hollywood Reporter , this marks the “beginning of a multi-picture deal between the studios that will see Blumhouse reimagine Lionsgate’s horror classics.”

The news comes after Lionsgate’s “Imaginary,” released in early March, earned $38 million worldwide on a shoestring production budget of about $10 million and spent far less on marketing. Lionsgate has also been looking to make easy money with reasonably budgeted movies, whether action, horror or otherwise, so this new alliance makes sense for both parties.

Blumhouse’s tie-up with James Wan’s other horror blockbuster Atomic Monsters was finalized earlier this year, though we’ve yet to see the first results of Jason Blum and Wan teaming up. In late 2023, the Five Nights at Freddy’s adaptation became the studio’s biggest hit ever, and unsurprisingly, the sequel has just been confirmed for release in late 2025.

As for Lionsgate, the studio is currently looking to expand the John Wick universe with a spinoff called Ballerina , led by Ana de Armas. This summer, it will release the controversial reboot of The Crow , which has reportedly received a warm early response in test screenings.

While I personally never found The Blair Witch Project impressive, it’s hard to deny its huge impact on modern horror, spawning what would become known as the “found footage” film and two deeply divisive sequels: Book of Shadows and Blair Witch ’16. The show also made nearly $250 million during its 1999 premiere on a ridiculously low production budget of well under $1 million. In case you forgot: 2019 also saw us receive an okay video game from Bloober Team. So yes, this legend refuses to die.
