talking hollywood reporter, Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Graham Wagner said that over the years of bringing the game to television, an important element that evolved was the show’s comedic approach. “When we say ‘comedy,’ we mean the show’s weird and unexpected ways—not necessarily funny,” explains Wagner. “We played all versions of this. There were some great things in the script and we were like, ‘Is this the show?’ “We found ourselves coming up with a lot of the more classic jokes and just leaning into the premise itself because it was ridiculous. Taking a ridiculous premise and playing it relatively seriously felt like the best approach.”
Robertson-Deworet said “setting that tone” and so carefully calibrating post-apocalyptic drama, graphic violence and zany humor was the hardest part of their task. But she also told the industry, “I love how these games make the apocalypse fun and weird, and I hope that’s something we get right to bring to the screen.”
