Hi friends!Welcome to installer Issue 34, Your Best Guide edge-The best thing in the world. (If you’re new here, welcome, we’re glad you found us, and you can installer Home page. )
I also have a great new video game show for you, a new ebook reader worth checking out, another doc about how bad technology is, a cute new drone, and more.
I have one more question that I can’t believe I haven’t asked yet: What do you use artificial intelligence for? Do you use Copilot to compose all your emails? Cooking with the help of ChatGPT? Using some app I’ve never heard of to query your every idea? Not getting anything out of AI at all?I’d love to know what apps and platforms you’re using and how you’re using them – I’m obsessed with trying to figure out what AI actually is forI want to hear all your thoughts.
Well, there’s a lot to do this week and I have a flight to catch. (If you’re in Chicago, Come and talk to me about AI, come and say hello! )let’s go.

fall
- fall out. first the last of usThen super mario bros.., and now this! We’re suddenly dazzled by the selection of fantastic video game adaptations. It’s post-apocalyptic, it’s epic, it’s obviously fun? The reviews are great – I’ll be watching this show on a plane ride to and from Chicago this weekend. can not wait anymore.
- DJI Open 2. There are two types of drones: photo drones and flying drones. Here’s a flyer: Get a first-person experience through goggles that last longer and move better than their predecessors. I need to try one of these.
- Find my device on Android. It took Google a while to get there, but device tracking is a great feature — and Google seems to be much more open to the web than Apple is to Find My. Use Nest devices cleverly to tell you where your keys are left in your home.
- The Anti-Social Network: Memes to Chaos. Most of these mind-bending Netflix docs talk about how bad the internet is— great hacker, social dilemmaSomething like that – seems overly simplistic and frustrating. This 4chan document has some of the same issues, but it’s smart and in-depth enough to teach you something about the web.
- Frame.io version 4. If you do anything with video, especially with other people, this is a big upgrade: Frame.io this week gets better search, more organizational tools, and custom metadata for better tracking thing. Everything is much better now on mobile devices.
- Clara Colors by Kobo. Color e-book reader! I like Kobo’s presence as a checkmate and competitor to the Kindle, even though I’m currently stuck in Amazon’s ecosystem. It’s the latest and greatest from E Ink, and at $150 the faster, better Clara looks like a steal.
- “This invention brought Disney millions of dollars, and then they lost it!” The Sodium Vapor Process is both a really cool story about the history of filmmaking and a cool-sounding name for a pop-punk band. Funny video about an interesting invention and why a worse product ended up winning.
- Fairbuds by Fairphone. Repairable earplugs are a huge win. Because, you know, the environment and waste and stuff like that, but also because you can replace the battery when it dies! This is a huge win for those who frequently replace their AirPods, since they only last an hour. They look beautiful too.
- support. This is a real For someone who writes a lot, this app looks beautiful. It’s part blank page, part organizer, plus a bunch of built-in AI writing tools. If you want AI, you have to pay, but luckily, I don’t. Free writing apps to win!
- civil war. I don’t know if I want to see this movie because it seems reasonable or if I want to see this movie no way Want to see this movie because it looks reasonable. But by all accounts, this dystopian near-future America is having a tough time getting off the ground—although we’ll see if it actually succeeds.
screen sharing
I already know Eric Mijikovsky Ever since he started making smartwatches, long before everyone was making smartwatches cool. After running Pebble for many years and working as a venture capitalist for a while, he spent the past few years developing a cross-platform messaging app called buzzer. It’s a great app that got into a messy battle with Apple and was recently acquired by Automattic, which owns WordPress.com and Tumblr among a few other things. Eric is now responsible for Automattic’s large messaging initiatives – and they’re very large.
I asked Eric to share his home screen, and I knew two things: he’s a total Android fan, and he uses a lot of messaging apps. I mean, he made a messaging app to organize all these messaging apps, so what did you expect? Eric is also Canadian, which means…I don’t know, exactly. But I want to know the answer.
Here’s Eric’s home screen, along with some information about the apps he uses and why:
Telephone: Samsung Z Flip 5 — The smallest Android phone currently on the market!
wallpaper: I don’t know, maybe it’s the default?
app: Maps, Photos, YouTube Music, Phone, Camera, Superman, Buzzer, Chrome.
One of my favorite things about Android is how few clicks it takes to perform tasks. I like having Calendar and Google Search on my home screen. We’ve added a search button to the Beeper Android widget for the same reason! One click + enter name = send message to anyone you want.
I still have all the chat apps installed because I need to keep an eye on them!
I also asked Eric to share something that interests him right now. Here’s what he shared:
- I have two kids under four so I don’t have a lot of free time, but we enjoy it 3 physical problems On Netflix and Mr and Mrs Smith!
- I am listening Kitchen Confidential Author: Anthony Bourdain, just finished reading There is no antimemetic department Author: qntm – my new favorite author! Highly recommend their short stories”Lena”. It made me reconsider my desire to upload my brain at some point.
- The best new app is Chat GPT — I use the audio version to create short stories and include my kids in them!

“I had recently moved to the UK and I needed a bank. I chose revolution. The app is feature-rich and reminds me a bit of Simple (RIP). It’s a bit loaded and I really had to get used to it, but it works and is pretty incredible. The multi-country and multi-currency usage is impressive. Also available in the US! ” —Greg
“I’ve been using Antenna box Have been using it for over a year now and it is the perfect app to replace Google Podcasts. It’s open source, has no ads, no analytics, and its staff are great: they hold regular community calls to discuss the project and take feedback very seriously. Android only! ” – Chesson

“I’ve been rewatching the early episodes big bang theory And marvel at all the old technology. Every apartment comes with an iPod dock, which was a whole subplot when Siri launched on the 4s, and a super-heavy Windows laptop. ” —Caleb
“I give lyrics Get a shot this week. Yes, another social media app. They claim it’s more real-time than Threads and therefore better suited for news, which is good, and it’s built on ActivityPub, which is great. Alliance win-win! Still trying it out, but fun. ” — Sigh Jinx
“So I’m playing Litmos, an iOS puzzle game with a very good visual design and a world music theme. They have a bunch of Spotify playlists with samples of music that inspired the game, but I’m an Apple Music user.so i turned to song conversion, a very handy little app that can give you Tidal links to songs you’ve recorded on Last.fm, or copy your old iTunes playlists directly into YouTube. Even if it can’t find a track, it can very easily help you (the human) match it to the right one. It was very convenient to switch music streaming services and continue to send and receive links to my Spotify friends easily. ” ——Daniel

A few weeks ago I was here complaining about my broken keyboard and my complicated relationship with mechanical keyboards. Thanks to everyone who contributed ideas! Some of you will say, “Buy these switches and keyboards and customize them for $95,000,” to all of you: thank you, you are my favorite. But the main advice I got was Logitech MX keys, which I ended up buying.I like This is so far. I’m certainly no expert, but it’s clicky without being loud, it has about six trillion shortcuts and customization options, and it feels nice and easy to type on. The backlighting is a little finicky and uneven, but I’d trade it for the hardware mic mute key, which already makes every meeting 10% more manageable.
Thanks to everyone who recommended something! One day I will get a fully mechanical keyboard and I promise to update you on all the stupid decisions I make.
