Medicaid, the public health program for low-income families, has had many problems, from people suddenly losing coverage to organizations costing states millions of dollars through fraudulent billing.
As John Oliver wrote in ” last week tonight In the video above, though, much of the conversation seems to be focused on spreading fear about the people actually using the program.
“A lot of the discussion around Medicaid seems to be centered around the fear that someone, somewhere, might be manipulating the system,” Oliver said. “Time and time again, the priority seems to be making sure no one gets a penny more than they deserve in health care, even as states take strange pleasure in the large amounts of money flowing to large organizations.”
To really drive home the point, Oliver enlisted the help of comedian Amber Ruffin to create a nightmarish parody ad featuring talking fruits and vegetables.
