Sony PlayStation 5 Pro has better GPU, more memory bandwidth

Rumors circulated last month that a PlayStation 5 Pro was imminent, and today a new report confirms this while adding more details about the console. Sony has apparently asked developers to ensure their games are compatible with the upcoming PS5 Pro, emphasizing the focus on improving ray tracing.

The PS5 Pro, reportedly codenamed Trinity, is said to have a more powerful GPU and slightly faster CPU mode. The changes in the Pro model should all make the console more capable of rendering games with ray tracing enabled, or reaching higher resolutions and frame rates in certain games.

According to purported documents outlining the new console’s features, GPU rendering speeds should be around 45% faster than the non-Pro PS5. The GPU will be larger and will also use faster memory to improve ray tracing. In fact, Sony boasts of using a “more powerful ray tracing architecture” in the aforementioned document.

As the name suggests, the Pro should be considered the higher-end version of the PS5, which strongly hints at the fact that the “vanilla” version will continue to be sold after the significantly more expensive Pro launches. Sony wants developers to have a software package that supports both.

Speaking of which, developers are said to have been able to order test kits, and Sony hopes every game submitted for certification starting in August will be compatible with PS5 Pro. Previous rumors on the matter talked about a release before the end-of-year holiday shopping season, and the developer’s timeline is consistent with that.

The CPU will be the same as in the non-Pro PS5, but it will have a new mode that allows it to be clocked at a higher frequency – 3.85 GHz. This is about 10% higher than a regular console at 3.5 GHz. Interestingly, the higher clock mode also requires more power allocated to the CPU, which means less power to the GPU – the GPU will be clocked about 1.5% lower in this mode.

The Pro’s memory bandwidth will be 576GB/s, up from the PS5’s 448GB/s, and the memory system should also be slightly more efficient. Games will be able to use an additional 1.2GB of system memory on PS5 Pro, for a total of up to 13.7GB (the existing version is 12.5GB).

PS5 Pro is also equipped with a “customized architecture for machine learning” that supports 300TOPS of 8-bit computing. Sony’s PlayStation Spectral Super-Resolution (PSSR) upscaling solution will use about 250MB of memory and introduce about 2 milliseconds of latency when upscaling 1080p to 4K, and the company is working on supporting resolutions up to 8K.
