Viber beats WhatsApp and Telegram with AI-powered chat summaries

long story short

  • Viber is launching AI-powered chat summaries for group conversations.
  • This feature uses OpenAI’s technology to quickly compress up to 100 unread messages in a chat.
  • The summary is generated in bullet point format highlighting action items and important discussion topics.

Popular messaging app Viber has announced a new AI-powered chat summary feature that provides a concise summary of unread messages in group chats. Leveraging OpenAI’s technology, the summary generator can quickly extract important information from up to 100 unread messages, saving users valuable time.

AI summaries provide a clear bullet point overview, pinpointing key decisions, to-do items, and important discussion topics. Viber envisions this simplifying many common scenarios, such as parents organizing complex schedules for their children’s activities, a group of friends coordinating an event, or travel companions finalizing logistical details.

Using the feature is simple – when entering a group chat with unread messages, a prompt will appear offering the option for an AI-generated summary. Viber places a strong emphasis on user privacy throughout the feature design process. The AI-generated summary is only visible to the requesting user and excludes any personally identifiable details other than username. Viber further emphasizes that it does not access, store or retain conversations or their excerpts on its servers, providing a secure and confidential experience.

Viber AI Chat Summarizer

AI Summarizer is rolling out to Viber iOS and Android app users in the United States, Philippines, Ukraine, Japan, Bulgaria and Poland, with extensive language support covering more than 50 languages. More countries will soon follow.

Viber’s innovative move signals a potential shift for messaging apps. While third-party tools powered by the ChatGPT API already provide similar chat summaries for some applications, Viber’s direct integration guarantees a seamless user experience. Competitors like WhatsApp and Telegram may take notice, and it could lead to the entire industry adopting this convenient feature.

But why stop there? Imagine the power of AI summarization beyond unread messages. What if we could summarize discussions from a specific period, such as the past few hours or even earlier? The ability to revisit key points in old conversations can be valuable.

Do you think the chat summary feature would be useful in your messaging app?
