Many younger readers will likely be more familiar with streaming services than traditional cable TV, which means you won’t be as familiar with the idea that TV used to not be as on-demand as it is now. You have to “channel hop” from station to station to find what you want to watch, and there’s no guarantee that there will be a good show. Streaming has almost completely moved away from this, but cable TV appears to be making a comeback, as a recent report from The Information claimed that Disney+ is looking to introduce 24/7 channels, complete with commercial breaks.

This obviously follows a long tradition of regular broadcast television, which dates back to 1936 with the BBC, the world’s first regular television service. There aren’t a lot of details on Disney’s specific plans for such a feature, but apparently it will be genre-based, or you can choose a channel based on whether you want to watch something like National Geographic or just a Disney animation. A movie. It sounds like you won’t be able to use this feature without a subscription, though, which means you’ll essentially have to pay to watch content, otherwise you’ll be able to watch content ad-free, but with ads spliced into the content you’re watching.
This feature seems to be growing in popularity among streaming services, as the horror streaming service has a similar 24/7 channel that lets you watch a variety of movies, and the Criterion Channel recently announced the same feature. Essentially, people do seem to want that TV channel style experience – I personally miss being able to listen to something in the middle of something and be able to take a set, scheduled break, even if it’s thanks to advertising.
There’s no word yet on when this feature will be available on Disney+, so for now you’ll just have to do your usual job of choosing what to watch before deciding to watch Anatomy for the millionth time.
