The Internet Computer is a multifunctional blockchain developed and launched by the DFINITY Foundation in May 2021, with the desire to become a “world computer” that can host decentralized applications (dapps). The goal is to provide controlled computing costs that significantly outperform the cost fluctuations and scalability issues of traditional blockchains. The backbone of Internet computing is chain-key cryptography, which provides innovative features to support this mission.
The operation of an Internet computer depends on several key components. As an open decentralized management system, the Network Neural System (NNS) incorporates community proposals and infinitely expands the blockchain network by continuously adding new nodes. Keep data storage costs to a minimum to facilitate the operation of on-chain dapps. To further enhance the user experience, smart contracts on the platform run directly to serve users’ HTTP requests. The platform also ensures user anonymity and employs a reverse gas model where the cost is borne by developers rather than users. In terms of infrastructure, Internet computers follow Bitcoin and do not rely on centralized cloud nodes.
The Internet Computer Proprietary Token ICP plays a vital role in this ecosystem. It provides governance functionality, where staking ICP tokens generates “neurons” that allow holders to vote and influence proposals while receiving rewards.
