A few years ago, Samsung announced 8.5Gbps LPDDR5X RAM, which at the time was the fastest in the world. Technology continues to advance, and today the company launched the faster LPDDR5X.
It runs at 10.7Gbps, beating the 9.6Gbps LPDDR5T variant SK Hynix launched last year. That means a 25% improvement in performance compared to the previous X variant, but speed isn’t the only upgrade.
Samsung is manufacturing these chips using a 12-nanometer process, which means the chips are smaller. This gives the company a 30% increase in capacity, and it’s currently building a 32GB package with it.
Of course, this product promotes AI applications. If you’ve been following this topic, you know that large models require a lot of memory – even a top-end GPU like the Nvidia RTX 4090 can only run with its 24GB of VRAM. Nvidia offers professional cards with more VRAM, but you don’t want to know how much they cost.
Anyway, it’s not over yet. With new power-saving technology, the new LPDDR5X chip can reduce power consumption by 25% and enter low-power mode for a long time. This is a boon for both battery-powered mobile devices and servers (electricity is a large part of the cost of running a server).
Samsung will begin mass production of 10.7Gbps LPDDR5X RAM in the second half of this year, pending testing of mobile chipsets. The company is also working on the development of next-generation LPDDR6 RAM.
