Facebook Messenger gets HD photos, shared albums, supports larger files

Facebook Messenger is getting a slew of new features, Meta announced today. First, you can now send “HD photos” in Messenger, just select the image you want to send, then turn on the HD switch that now appears, and hit “Send.”

High-definition photos have recently appeared in WhatsApp, and it’s great to see Meta’s other big messaging app finally following suit. HD photos you receive in Messenger will have an “HD” label in the upper right corner so you know your eyes aren’t deceiving you.

Next, you can create shared albums with friends and family to which you can add photos and videos. To create this type of album, select multiple photos in a group chat and tap Create Album (or long-press on a photo in the chat and tap Create Album). To add photos and videos to an existing album, click Add to Album. You can of course also rename the album if desired.

Everyone in the group chat can view, add, delete, and download all images and videos in the shared album. To go to a chat’s shared album, click the group chat name, then click Media and you’ll see them there. This will be rolled out in the coming weeks.

Next, you can now add people to Messenger using the QR code. Everyone gets one, and you can scan it to add someone, or share yours via a link.

Finally, Messenger has increased its file size limit – you can now send files up to 100MB. Support for all major formats including Word, PDF, Excel and zip – this has been a feature that has been conspicuously missing for a long time, so it’s definitely a case of “better late than never”.
