Instagram may be developing a Snap Map scam

Originality is overrated anyway. Instagram will reportedly do what it does best: blatantly copy the functionality of another social media site.

Think about it. The story was stolen from Snapchat. Reels is a TikTok scam. It replicates Twitter/X’s Notes and Threads and BeReal’s Candid. The latest scam? Snapshot map. That’s right, Insta is reportedly returning to its roots and taking inspiration from Snapchat.

software engineer Alessandro Paruzzi News broke on X that Instagram was developing a friend map. Next, Paruzzi points out, is a related nearby feature.

Paruzzi noted that the feature will be opt-in and your location will be end-to-end encrypted. But basically, you can reportedly see where your friends are on a map, just like Snap Maps.

Now, to be clear, this feature hasn’t been released yet and amounts to nothing more than a rumor at this point. However, The Verge notes that Paluzzi “discovered many of Instagram’s features before they were released.”

If Paluzzi turns out to be right, there will be another Snap feature on Instagram.
