Today, DJI officially launches the Avata 2 FPV drone, which is a rare case of being better than its predecessor and cheaper. The new drone features an ultra-wide-angle 12 MP camera that uses a 1/1.3-inch sensor, which improves image quality, expands dynamic range, and can handle low-light scenes better because it can physically absorb more light. With an angle of 155 degrees, you can shoot HDR video up to 4K 60fps, and slow-motion footage at 2.7K 120fps.
There is another 5 degrees of gimbal tilt (minus 85 degrees to 80 degrees). The maximum flight time has been improved and is now 23 minutes, and it also supports PD fast charging. The new “two-way charging manager” has a power accumulation function that can transfer the remaining power of multiple batteries to the one with the highest power to quickly replenish power at critical moments.
The maximum video transmission distance is 13 kilometers (an increase of 3 kilometers from the original), the delay is as low as 24 milliseconds, 1080p 100fps, and the maximum bit rate is 60Mbps. The drone is 28 grams lighter than its predecessor and has a body that is 16 mm shorter and 32 mm wider, making it more stable.
The new DJI Goggles 3 let you see what your drone is seeing as it flies, sending real-time information from the drone to the DJI Fly app and to another device up to 5m away. You can also use the cable to share the live stream to a monitor or another pair of Goggles 3 to share the excitement with those around you. Goggles 3 also features a built-in battery (for an extra hour of battery life) and GPS, as well as dual 1080p, 700 nit micro-OLED displays. There’s even a pass-through mode that lets you observe your surroundings while flying.
Avata 2’s 46GB of internal storage can store up to 90 minutes of 1080p 60fps video, and you can quickly share recordings to your smartphone via Wi-Fi.
DJI Avata 2 is priced at $999 when combined with DJI Goggles 3 and DJI RC Motion 3 (single battery). Add two extra batteries, a two-way charging hub, and a crossbody bag for $1,199. The DJI FPV remote control retails for $199, and the Avata 2 ND filter set retails for $79. If you just want the drone and nothing else, that’s $489.
