The original DualSense that shipped with the PlayStation 5 had some smart upgrades over the previous-generation DualShock 4. That said, it still has a lot of room for improvement, but aside from third-party controller manufacturers, this is the only official controller on the market.

Sony heard our cries and responded with the DualSense Edge. This is a premium controller that promises to give you a competitive advantage (get it?). However, how does it compare to the old reliable controller?

DualSense vs. DualSense Edge: Price

Can you master both?

The standard DualSense is widely available and can be ordered online today. It’s face value is €69.99/$69.99/£59.99, but you can often find small discounts below that.

The DualSense Edge is also available now, and while it was initially scarce, you can now easily get your hands on it. It’ll cost $199.99 / €239.99 / £209.99, which is almost half the price of the PS5 itself.

The DualSense Edge pro controller allows four custom profiles. Here’s how to set them up and use them in your game.

DualSense Edge vs. DualSense: Design

look and feel

What we can evaluate are the differences in design between the two controllers. The standard DualSense is now available in a variety of colors, from stealth black to neon pink and blue, so you have a variety of finishes to choose from.

But for the most part, the color is uniform across the entire controller, except for the section around the thumbstick. In contrast, the DualSense Edge breaks that down, being predominantly white but with a contrasting black touchpad.

On the face of the controller, though, the button array is the same, and they all have shoulder buttons and triggers, too.

On the back of the DualSense Edge we see the main difference in design. First, there are two paddle buttons (which can be replaced with lever-style buttons), allowing you to map more controls to the back of the pad.

Second, two sets of switches allow you to adjust the trigger stop distance so you don’t have to press the trigger buttons too far to activate them.

These are major additions that are a must-have for competitive gamers, and are especially handy for shooters, allowing you to press a button without losing control of your target even for a split second.

If the worst happens

One of the biggest concerns for long-time DualSense owners is repairability – the interesting new features Sony has inserted into its DualSense controllers are said to be causing more wear and tear issues.

Analog stick drift in particular plagues the controller, though, as it does with many others on the market.

This won’t be a big deal with the DualSense Edge, which adds a major new feature in the form of removable and replaceable analog stick units.

These replacement units will be sold separately so you don’t have to send the entire controller in for repair, which is a very welcome change. Priced at $20/£20/€25, this is a very welcome addition.

The standard DualSense is a fun box of tricks, with smart features like digital triggers that give you feedback when you squeeze them, and advanced haptic features that make the controller vibrate in entirely new ways.

It has a microphone and a speaker built into your controller, as well as motion controls, giving you access to fun control options as well.

All of this is still included in the DualSense Edge – nothing is missing, Sony has just added more options.

In addition to new buttons, you can fluidly edit button layouts and save them to different profiles so you can switch between control schemes on the fly.

It also comes with a USB-C braided cable that locks the controller to ensure it doesn’t fall out in the heat of the moment, which is ideal for anyone gaming in a competitive environment.

When choosing between the Sony DualSense Edge and the standard PlayStation DualSense Wireless Controller, your choice depends on your gaming style and budget. Tailored for competitive gamers, the DualSense Edge features customizable buttons, replaceable analog sticks and secure USB-C connectivity. It’s great for those who value precision and adaptability in their gaming rig, but it comes with a higher price tag of around $200 and a shorter battery life of up to 6 hours.

The standard DualSense, on the other hand, is a great value at around $70, has a longer battery life of up to 13 hours, and comes in a variety of colors. It lacks the Edge’s advanced features, but is a solid and cost-effective choice for everyday gaming. The choice depends on whether you prefer a high-end, customizable controller or a simple, affordable controller.
