It seems that as games become more expensive to develop, take longer and riskier to make, the video game industry is embracing a safer strategy across the board: reheat the leftovers that people already love and use them as Sell these things to them.
Of course, 2024 isn’t the first year to see multiple remakes and remasters. There are also quite a few game re-releases in 2023 and 2022, as well as other years in the past. But this year, it does feel like the floodgates have fully opened and the industry is being inundated with remakes or remakes of popular games.I mean, so far in 2024 we’ve seen three A different classic Star Wars game–Frontline, Frontline IIand dark power— remastered and released on consoles and PC in a matter of weeks.

Ignoring previously released remasters or remastered games that have just been ported to new platforms, I counted nearly 30 remasters or remasters that have been released or are planned for release in 2024.

I may have missed a few, but even so, there were over 30 remasters or remakes in one year. Basically every other week. This does not include collections containing more than one game –like Tomb Raider I-III–-This will inflate the number even more.
Why this industry is reshaping everything
Look, I understand why we get so many re-releases of games. Games are difficult and expensive to makemany of which cannot be compared with Five or six live service songs sucked up all the oxygen in the room.. It makes sense, as Hollywood has done for decades, that the industry would look back and culled from past hits and beloved classics, remaking and repackaging them for new audiences. Not only are these remasters and remakes often cheaper and faster to produce, but they also seem less risky to investors and corporate executives.
“People have loved tomb Raider. Clean it up, add some new features, and sell it to them! ” This is probably the type of execution planning that many studios and publishers are doing right now.
I don’t begrudge anyone working on any of these remakes or remakes. I also think remakes and remasters are worth the effort and worth playing in their own right. However, As we pointed out before, when people work on remakes or remakes, it means they don’t get a chance to do something new. This is too bad. It’s a shame that so many people seem to be more willing to spend money on remastered games than brand new ones. But as game prices continue to riseI guess it’s getting harder and harder to spend $70 on something new and different when the thing you liked is now back and half the price.
Eventually, remasters and remakes flooding the market may be something we should get used to. Games are only going to get more expensive and bigger. The cost of risk is high.So instead, here it is lollipop chainsaw again.
