CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) – The Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office wishes K-9 Diana “an amazing retirement” as her hard work resulted in more than 229 arrests.
K-9 Diana’s Four Paws works with the Cuyahoga County Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force to enforce the law as a weapon to protect children and combat child pornographers.
Diana is a Black Lab and has served as an ICAC Electronic Scent Detection K-9 since November 2017.
She can use her nose to sniff out digital devices such as laptops and thumb drives, and can even find a microSD card the size of a fingernail in a bag of trash.
Electronic scent detection dogs are trained to smell triphenylphosphine oxide, a compound used in circuit boards that helps operate cell phones and computers.
The dogs could also detect hydroxycyclohexyl phenyl ketone on CDs and DVDs.
The ICAC said Diana’s crime-fighting career began on the streets.
Diana was a stray before being trained and in February 2018 became one of only three electronic sniffer dogs in the state.
According to the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office, during her one-year career with ICAC, Diana participated in more than 378 searches and discovered more than 620 electronic devices.
“During her seven years of service, she stopped and saved countless children from exploitation,” the prosecutor’s office said. “Thank you to K-9 Diana for her service, we are so grateful!”
