Patriot officially launches the first solid-state drive equipped with PCIe 5.0 x4 interface, aiming to meet the needs of demanding users. The Viper PV553 SSD features the company’s new active cooling system with an aluminum heatsink, blower and special heat shield to ensure optimal cooling under high workloads for consistent performance.
Patriot’s Viper PV553 will be available in 1 TB, 2 TB and 4 TB configurations, using Micron’s 232-layer 3D TLC NAND memory, and we speculate Phison’s PS5026-E26 controller, since Patriot is a loyal partner of the Taiwanese SSD controller developer partner.
As for performance, Patriot rates its 2 TB and 4 TB PV553 with sequential read/write speeds of up to 12,400 MB/s and 11,800 MB/s, respectively, as well as up to 1.4 million random 4K read and write IOPS. The 1 TB model, meanwhile, is slightly slower, offering read/write speeds of up to 11,700 MB/s and 9,500 MB/s and up to 1.3/1.4 million read/write IOPS.
These drives come in an M.2-2280 form factor and are compatible with desktops with plenty of internal space, as Patriot’s Viper PV553 SSDs come with a very good cooling system that takes away the 11W of thermal power they can dissipate. The cooler (16.5mm z-height) features a sizable aluminum heatsink that covers the controller and memory chips, a blower, thermal pads on either side of the drive, and an aluminum case (the company calls it a thermal) shield – Directs air generated by the fan through the fins of the heat sink to maximize cooling performance.
Extensive cooling is designed to ensure that Patriot’s Viper PV553 drives maintain performance even under severe workloads. In fact, Patriot says the cooler ensures the drive stays around 45°C under normal room temperature conditions.
At the same time, the PV553 SSD isn’t the Patriot’s fastest drive. Recently, the company demonstrated the Viper PV573 SSD, which uses Micron B58R 3D TLC NAND and has a data transfer rate of 2400 MT/s, with sequential read and write speeds of up to 14,000 MB/s and 12,000 MB/s respectively. The drive will likely benefit more from a new cooling system, but that will come at a later date.
Like Patriot’s premium SSDs, the Viper PV553 drive comes with a five-year warranty and is guaranteed to write 700, 1400 and 3000 TB of data.
