Welcome to day three of Gizmodo’s March Madness Challenge, choosing the greatest apps of all time! WhatsApp barely beats Dark Sky in our tests second round In the competition, it received 53% of the votes. Rest in peace dark sky. Today, an epic feud unfolds between Google Maps and Yelp.
If you’re just tuning in, you can read all of our selection criteria for this historic match right here. If you think we’ve missed your personal favorite app, give us a shout in the comments. Now, let’s get into today’s contestants.
With over 1 billion monthly active users, our first entrant is the undisputed king of mapping apps. Launched in 2005, Google Maps is one of the oldest candidates in the competition, but its age shows no signs of slowing down. If there’s one mobile app that can be said to have made the world a better place, this one is indisputable. The days of printing MapQuest directions were officially over when this bad boy came along. Even Apple hasn’t caught up.
With about 100 million monthly users, Yelp is clearly at a disadvantage in this competition, but what it lacks in scale it makes up for in determination. For at least 13 years, online review centers have been Keep throwing little daggers at Google and prompted governments to take antitrust action against the search giant.
Restaurant reviews on Rotten Tomatoes taught us how to take advice from the world’s most annoying Karen and gave people a way to harass businesses over little things from halfway around the world. But at its best, Yelp can help emerging small businesses rise to the top by simply focusing on quality and letting the feedback roll in.
So what will the readers be? Would you vote for a map of one of the world’s most die-hard monopolies, or leave a five-star review on Yelp without commenting at all?
