Google Pixel Watch 3 may use UWB for more secure phone unlocking

Last year, we reported on an upcoming feature related to unlocking Android phones using a smartwatch. However, the so-called Watch Unlock is still just a rumor, and now we may know why.

Google Pixel Watch 3 may use UWB for more secure phone unlocking

according to 9 to 5 google, Google is preparing to launch this feature with the Google Pixel Watch 3, which will offer UWB connectivity. This will allow for faster and more secure unlocking of the phone without using a fingerprint reader or face unlock.

Buried deep within the Play Services application’s source code is a reference to Watch Unlock’s “UWB ranging.” However, the code also indicates that the feature may not work as expected in countries where UWB is not an officially certified connection protocol.

Regardless, these two leaks strongly suggest that Google is working on a more advanced method of unlocking the watch than originally thought, and the UWB chip inside the Pixel Watch 3 will finally make it possible.
