Elon Musk says his startup xAI will be open source Gronk Later this week, the inner workings of a chatbot are revealed to anyone who wants to dissect artificial intelligence or build a competing product. The news was posted in Musk’s home state of Texas around 3 a.m. on Monday, and while no details were provided, it was another stimulus for him. The ongoing battle with OpenAI.

Musk was one of OpenAI’s earliest investors, but he parted ways with the company several years ago and has become an increasingly outspoken critic in the wake of ChatGPT’s stunning rise.
OpenAI did not immediately respond to Gizmodo’s request for comment.
“Open source” is a vague term that can mean anything from releasing every line of code to sharing a few key details, and Musk’s announcement didn’t elaborate on the plan.This time last year, he carefully demonstrated his decision X open source, although the code he released doesn’t reveal much beyond a high-level view of some of the company’s algorithms. Still, the CEO is a long-time supporter of open source research. Tesla has a history of publishing details of some of its patents, something most companies keep secret.
Musk is not the first to open source a chatbot.Both Yuan and the latest French upstart Mistral AI have released some of their AI code, although in both cases the methods retain key details.
But the move strengthens Musk’s argument against OpenAI. To a large extent, Altman has abandoned the company’s commitment to public work. Musk made the point bluntly in a late-night tweet story. “OpenAI is a lie,” he wrote.
