long story short

  • Google Contacts version 4.26 introduces a new connected app box.
  • The new section moves various contact methods from apps like WhatsApp and Telegram into drop-down menus.
  • The new look means you won’t see the same phone numbers again right away.

You may have noticed that the latest update to the Google Contacts app brings a cleaner look to each contact entry.Among other changes, version 4.26 of the Google Contacts app introduces a separate “Connected Apps” box to reduce the list of options you see immediately when viewing your contacts (via Android system).

Before the update, you might have seen the phone numbers of acquaintances, then some contact options for WhatsApp, more lines for Telegram, and so on. This lets you quickly do things like initiate a WhatsApp voice call, but it also looks busy and cluttered. All of these contact options related to other apps are now organized in the “Connected Apps” box below the main contact information.

As you’ll see in the screenshot below, the Connected Apps box initially displays a row of entries for each app with a drop-down arrow next to it. Tapping the arrow expands the box for that specific app to show various contact options for voice calls, video calls, and messages.

This change means you can only see a contact’s phone number when you open the contact’s entry. Every option to contact them through various connected apps is just a tap away than before.

We love this new look. In addition to being more pleasing to the eye, it will also be less confusing for some users. It can be a bit confusing for some people to open a contact page and see a wall of the same phone number over and over again.
