Nokia launches 25G PON fiber optic modem to accelerate high-speed internet deployment

Nokia has announced the launch of its latest innovation, the symmetrical 25G PON fiber optic modem, aimed at attracting telecom operators who are building high-speed broadband networks.
Nokia Symmetrical 25G PON Fiber ModemThis breakthrough technology promises to take internet speeds to new heights, up to 20 times faster than current gigabit solutions. The modem’s compact design allows it to be easily mounted on a wall, inside a building or in an outdoor cabinet, ensuring instant access to a lightning-fast internet connection.

Demand for high-speed broadband access is surging as users increasingly rely on high-quality multi-gigabit services for residential and commercial use. From the emerging Metaverse and cloud gaming to cybersecurity and Industry 4.0 applications, users now seek multi-gigabit services that can meet their changing broadband needs.

Nokia’s 25G PON fiber modem not only addresses this need, but also lays the foundation for future-proof networks that can meet the growing demand for enhanced broadband services. Operators can seamlessly upgrade their existing GPON or XGS PON networks to achieve true 10Gbps and beyond with unprecedented ease. The upgrade is designed to significantly improve business productivity for enterprises while giving consumers immediate access to the bandwidth they need for bandwidth-intensive applications such as artificial intelligence, gaming and security.

Geert Heyninck, general manager of Nokia Broadband Networks, highlighted the significant business benefits that the 25G PON ecosystem brings to customers. He highlighted the efficiency of Nokia’s new fiber optic modem, claiming it would be able to support countless services and applications in the fiber-optic Internet of Everything era.

Jeff Heynen, vice president of broadband access and home networking at Dell’Oro Group, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the significant growth in 25G PON deployments and the 25GS-PON MSA (Multiple Source Agreement) group. Heynen pointed out that the technology can coexist seamlessly with existing infrastructure without the need for additional feeder fiber or ODN elements.

The launch of Nokia’s 25G PON fiber modem complements the company’s growing 25G PON portfolio, which includes Lightspan FX, DF and MF fiber access platforms (OLT), as well as industry-leading 25G PON tailored for cable operators Sealed fiber optic access nodes.

Key features of the 25G PON ONT product include compatibility with GPON, XGS-PON and 50G PON on the same ODN, a ruggedized compact design suitable for various deployment scenarios, and symmetrical 25 Gb/s throughput using pluggable optics. In addition, the modem provides frequency and clock synchronization for mobile transmission and can seamlessly connect to cellular base stations to transmit mobile traffic over PON networks in plug-and-play mode to meet the capacity, latency and synchronization requirements of 5G networks. In addition, it supports breakpoint functionality for enterprise and wholesale services, further enhancing its versatility and usefulness.

Nokia has shipped more than 1 million 25G PON-ready ports to date and says 25G PON is ready for activation in more than 150 networks worldwide. Nokia said that the 25G PON ecosystem has matured, with more than 60 operators, system suppliers, chipsets and optical suppliers forming the MSA, committed to standardizing and accelerating the technology.

Some of the operators currently deploying 25G PON include Google Fiber, EPB, Vodafone Bulgaria and OGI. More than 30 operators are trialling 25G PON in residential, mobile fronthaul and business connectivity applications.
