long story short

  • OpenAI may have accidentally leaked details of a new AI model called GPT-4.5 Turbo.
  • Leaked information suggests that GPT-4.5 Turbo will be faster, more accurate, and have a larger knowledge base than its predecessor.

Social media was abuzz last night, with multiple posts discussing potential new artificial intelligence models from OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT. The company appears to have accidentally published a blog post about the model, which was subsequently indexed by the search engines Bing and DuckDuckGo.

Discerning users on Reddit X (formerly Twitter) Noticed a briefly indexed blog post mentioning the GPT-4.5 Turbo model. Although the page has been removed and throws a 404 error, the cached description hints at the model’s superior speed, accuracy, and scalability compared to its predecessor, GPT-4 Turbo.

You may notice that the leaked clip above mentions a June 2024 “knowledge deadline.” The description of “knowledge cutoff” refers to the date when the AI will stop being trained on information. This has led some to believe that this is either a typo or a sign that GPT-4.5 Turbo may be released in July/August. For context, the current knowledge deadline for the GPT-4 Turbo model is April 2023.

Another key piece of information is the mention of a 256k token context window, doubling GPT-4 Turbo’s 128k capacity. The move may be OpenAI’s response to the growing trend of large contextual windows, especially after Google’s recent progress with its AI model Gemini. Back in February, Google announced that Gemini would have a contextual window of up to 1 million tokens. The arrival of GPT-4.5 Turbo may help level the playing field.

OpenAI has been tight-lipped about the leak, so the status of GPT-4.5 Turbo and the June 2024 date remain shrouded in mystery for now. However, the timing is interesting because March 14th is also the one-year anniversary of the release of GPT-4.
