Report: Apple considering licensing Google’s Gemini AI for iPhone

The upcoming iOS 18 version is being hailed as one of the biggest updates in iPhone software history, and generative AI features are rumored to finally be coming to the iPhone. There have long been rumors about how Apple will add generative AI to iOS, but we now have a potential answer – Google Gemini. Bloomberg Apple is reportedly in active talks with Google to license its Gemini-generated artificial intelligence model. Apple is also reportedly considering OpenAI and its GPT series of models.

According to the new report, Apple will bring new AI features developed based on its own large language models (LLMs) – one of which is said to be codenamed Ajax and which Apple “spends millions of dollars every day” to train. But Cupertino may go the licensing route for its generative AI features in iOS 18. Apple and Google have struck a massive search engine deal that reportedly brings Apple more than $18 billion in annual revenue. Regardless, don’t expect Apple to release iOS 18 before WWDC in June.
