Uh-oh, things don’t sound good for the PS VR2 as production is reportedly being paused to help shift a backlog of headsets

remember PlayStation VR2? No? This is understandable, as Sony seems to be having trouble selling its products, and it has reportedly paused production of them.

Throughout its years and forms, virtual reality has never really taken off successfully, and the same seems to be true for PS VR2. A recent report from Bloomberg claims that Sony has apparently paused production of the PS VR2 headset because it has a backlog of units that it has yet to successfully sell. According to sources interviewed by Bloomberg, sales of PS VR2 have slowed down in the year since its launch, with total production apparently reaching as high as 2 million units.

PS VR2 shipments have apparently been declining each financial quarter, with shipments unsurprisingly being highest during the headset’s launch, according to market intelligence firm IDC, which tracks shipments to retailers. Sony clearly has a surplus of headphones throughout its supply chain, but IDC’s Francisco Jeronimo says supply is expected to recover thanks to the arrival of Apple’s Vision Pro headphones. “We expect the VR market to grow at an average annual rate of 31.5% between 2023 and 2028,” Jeronimo said.

While Meta has successfully moved far more Quest headsets than Sony, it still hasn’t been able to consistently deliver content on the platform, a problem faced by both companies. Apparently, there are also concerns that the Apple Vision Pro will face similar issues, especially considering how expensive it is, so who knows how things will actually play out.

At the very least, Sony is apparently testing the ability to let you play PC VR games on your PC using the PS VR2, an option that would certainly help justify spending hundreds of pounds on a headset that doesn’t really let you play a lot of games.
