what you need to know
- YouTube is highlighting its new “altered or synthesized” content disclosures that creators must fill out when uploading videos.
- If a user’s video contains digitally altered people, footage, or scenes, they must say “yes” to disclose this information.
- Videos containing AI-generated or “altered” content will get a label that users will start noticing “in the coming weeks.”
YouTube has highlighted the arrival of its new artificial intelligence disclosures, which creators must comply with when uploading videos.
According to YouTube, today (March 18), the platform launched a new set of “changed content” details that creators must fill out. The company added that creators must “disclose to viewers that authentic content—content that viewers could easily mistake for real people, places, or events—is produced with altered or synthetic media, including generative artificial intelligence.”
This new section will ask creators questions about whether characters, footage or scenes in videos have been digitally altered. If the answer to the question is “yes,” YouTube says it will apply the tag to your video or clip. Additionally, users can find these tags in the video’s description box.
Disclosing that your video contains altered or synthesized content will not prevent it from being discovered on the platform. The platform said creators who don’t properly tag their videos will receive a “creator does not have the option to remove” tag.
If this behavior continues, YouTube says it will take content removal, suspend creator accounts, and other penalties.
Animation, color adjustment, special effects, beauty filters and other obviously fantasy and imaginative content are not included in the scope of modified content. Moreover, creators don’t have to worry about being penalized if they use artificial intelligence to generate scripts or subtitles.
More information about this new disclosure can be found on YouTube’s help page. YouTube viewers will notice these new tabs appearing on all devices “in the coming weeks.”
YouTube said its latest artificial intelligence and changed content disclosures are part of its efforts to combat misinformation. The company also wants to “increase the transparency of digital content.”
It’s not surprising that YouTube is going this route, as Google has agreed to continue taking steps to help prevent social risks. The White House is urging big tech companies like Google to better handle artificial intelligence-generated content and the problems it can cause for everyday users. Through its AI security practices, Google agrees to provide watermarks, metadata tags, and more to notify users when content is synthesized to create it.
Users may continue to see these new tabs as YouTube is developing several generative AI features. The company has begun rolling out a beta for premium members to test its new conversational artificial intelligence as well as “Dream Track,” which lets creators digitally sample the sounds of popular artists.
