Google has released the long-awaited second version of the Google Pixel Watch, a year after the first version was launched. Given the overall growth of the smartwatch and fitness tracking industry, we expected the Pixel Watch 3 to be better and are already looking forward to learning more.

What we think we know

There haven’t been many rumors surrounding the Google Pixel Watch 3 so far, so we don’t know much about what the third version might bring. Of course, we’ll know more as the release date gets closer, but for now there’s some speculation.

The first rumor comes from a source at 9to5Google, predicting that the Pixel Watch 3 will come in two sizes. Exact dimensions are still unknown, but two size options make sense given the competition. The Apple Watch comes in two sizes (41mm and 45mm), as does the Samsung Galaxy Watch (40mm and 44mm). Most Garmin smartwatches are available in a variety of sizes, including the Venu 3 (41mm and 45mm), which is closest to the Pixel Watch. Given this, we’ll likely see the Pixel Watch 3 come in the same size as the original at 41mm, as well as a larger version around 45mm.

What we want to see from the Google Pixel Watch 3

Our dream for a new watch

While we loved the Pixel Watch 2, there are a few things we’d like to see in the upcoming Pixel Watch 3. First, Google needs to address the battery life issue. Battery life on the Pixel Watch 2 is improved over the first version, but still lags behind the competition. Most users expect more than 24 hours of battery life from their smartwatches, so we hope Google can achieve this with the Pixel Watch 3. This may mean a thicker design, but for many, it’s worth it.

Likewise, we are paying close attention to how fees are charged. The first version is wireless, while the second uses pogo pins, meaning each version requires a different charger. While we love the wireless charging feature and are excited to see it return, what we hope for most is consistency going forward. Before Fitbit was acquired by Google, almost every fitness tracker had its own dedicated charger. We sincerely hope Google doesn’t copy that book.

While the Pixel Watch 2 is one of the best-looking smartwatches on the market, the small display due to thick bezels isn’t our favorite. The real estate is there; it’s just that Google doesn’t seem to be taking full advantage of it. It’s nice to see Google squeezing more out of the existing display size to make it easier for people to scan things quickly. Generally speaking, larger sizes are also good, offering two options for people with different wrist sizes and preferences.

Should I buy the Google Pixel Watch 2?

The Pixel Watch 2 is only five months old, so it’s by no means outdated. In fact, Google recently released software updates for its Pixel Watch lineup, including the Pixel Watch 2. Still, it’s questionable whether this watch is worth buying, or it might be better to wait until the third version is released.

Whether you should buy the second iteration or wait for the third basically depends on your preferences and what you have now. We don’t know much about what’s coming, but we expect better battery life and two size options, which may be essential features for some. If you currently own the first Pixel Watch and can wait a little longer, it makes sense to wait for the third version.

You’ll get a bigger boost in features and specs, making your new watch last longer. If you don’t currently have a Pixel Watch and don’t care about needing to charge the watch every day or the display size, the Pixel Watch 2 may be enough, even if a new version is coming soon.
